Ten years of piezometric and water-quality monitoring at a managed aquifer recharge scheme fed by tertiary-treated municipal effluent are reported. The water table recovered by 6.4 metres, nitrate concentrations in the receiving formation stayed below the drinking-water limit throughout, and residual pharmaceutical compounds attenuated within the first 120 metres of subsurface travel.
District cooling is usually assessed on electricity alone. Metering eleven plants shows make-up water for evaporative rejection running at 1.9 litres per kilowatt-hour of cooling, which at city scale is comparable to the output of a mid-sized desalination train and is absent from every published feasibility study reviewed.
Twelve brackish-water reverse-osmosis units drawing on the same aquifer are compared over four years of operation. Silica scaling, rather than biofouling, governs the cleaning interval once recovery is pushed beyond 78 per cent, and an antiscalant dose schedule indexed to the measured saturation index extends run length by nineteen days on average.
Isobaric pressure exchangers and turbochargers are compared across nine plants above 100,000 cubic metres per day. Pressure exchangers hold their efficiency advantage across the whole load range, and the gap widens below 70 per cent load — which matters because plants on seasonal demand spend a third of the year there.
Thermal, membrane and hybrid pathways are assessed cradle-to-gate on one functional unit. The electricity mix dominates every impact category except marine eutrophication, so a plant on a decarbonising grid improves faster than any process change available to it — a result that reorders the usual list of retrofit priorities.
