Electrolysis feedwater must be far purer than drinking water, and the desalination and polishing stages are usually omitted from hydrogen cost models. Accounting for them adds between 0.9 and 2.3 per cent to the total electrical demand of a gigawatt-scale plant — small against the electrolyser, and large against the margins quoted in current offtake agreements.

Pumping, treatment and distribution are optimised jointly rather than sequentially across a municipal network serving 1.4 million residents. Co-optimisation shifts 22 per cent of pumping load off the evening peak without any new storage, and reduces annual electricity spend by 8.9 per cent at unchanged service pressure.
Ninety-one plants across fourteen countries, reporting between 2004 and 2024, are classified by collector type, storage strategy and feedwater source, and every reported figure is recomputed to a common recovery basis before comparison. Hybrid photovoltaic–thermal configurations dominate the recent literature, but long-run fouling data remains scarce because most pilots publish a single commissioning year.

A battery-buffered photovoltaic array driving a variable-flow reverse-osmosis skid is assessed for five off-grid coastal villages. Sizing the array for the median rather than the peak demand, and allowing production to follow irradiance, cuts capital cost by 31 per cent while holding supply reliability above 96 per cent of demand-days.
A multi-effect distillation plant coupled to a parabolic-trough collector field is modelled for an inland arid site with no grid connection. At a gain output ratio of 9.4 the levelised cost of water reaches 1.28 US dollars per cubic metre, and avoided emissions amount to 2.7 kg of carbon dioxide per cubic metre against the diesel-fired reference case.
District cooling is usually assessed on electricity alone. Metering eleven plants shows make-up water for evaporative rejection running at 1.9 litres per kilowatt-hour of cooling, which at city scale is comparable to the output of a mid-sized desalination train and is absent from every published feasibility study reviewed.
Isobaric pressure exchangers and turbochargers are compared across nine plants above 100,000 cubic metres per day. Pressure exchangers hold their efficiency advantage across the whole load range, and the gap widens below 70 per cent load — which matters because plants on seasonal demand spend a third of the year there.
Thermal, membrane and hybrid pathways are assessed cradle-to-gate on one functional unit. The electricity mix dominates every impact category except marine eutrophication, so a plant on a decarbonising grid improves faster than any process change available to it — a result that reorders the usual list of retrofit priorities.
